This past May I led a pilgrimage to Mexico to visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Saint Toribio Romo, Saint Jose Sanchez del Rio and the area of the Mexican martyrs in Guanajuato, Guadalajara & Sahuayo. It was on May 3 when I discovered the celebration of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated in Mexico instead of September 14.

The tradition of honoring the “day of the cross” on May 3 was very popular with many processions, singing of hymns, and decorated crosses along the side of the road, parks, cemeteries and homes. What is significant about the May 3rd day of the cross? It is the miraculous finding of the true cross by Saint Helena on May 3, 326. She had a church built on the site of the crucifixion, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ better known as the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The September 14th date however, is the date of the dedication of the church. During the revision of the calendar, the feast was moved from May 3 to September 14. However, Mexico and some other Latin American regions petitioned Rome to retain the May 3rd day as the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Here is the prayer that Bishop of Jerusalem, Saint Macarius recited to confirm the true cross through a healing miracle of a woman:

“O Lord, who by the Passion of Thine only Son on the cross, didst deign to restore salvation to mankind, and who even now hast inspired thy handmaid Helena to seek for the blessed wood to which the author of our salvation was nailed, show clearly which it was, among the three crosses, that was raised for Thy glory. Distinguish it from those which only served for a common execution. Let this woman who is now expiring return from death's door as soon as she is touched by the wood of salvation.”

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you, because by your Cross you have redeemed the world!

¡Feliz domingo!

En mayo pasado dirigí una peregrinación a México para visitar el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, San Toribio Romo, San José Sánchez del Río y el área de los mártires mexicanos en Guanajuato, Guadalajara y Sahuayo. Fue el 3 de mayo cuando descubrí que en México se celebra la celebración de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz en lugar del 14 de septiembre.

La tradición de honrar el “día de la cruz” el 3 de mayo era muy popular con muchas procesiones, cantos de himnos y cruces decoradas a lo largo de caminos, parques, cementerios y casas. ¿Qué tiene de significativo el día de la cruz del 3 de mayo? Se trata del hallazgo milagroso de la verdadera cruz por parte de Santa Elena el 3 de mayo del año 326. Ella hizo construir una iglesia en el lugar de la crucifixión, sepultura y resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo mejor conocida como la Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro. Sin embargo, la fecha del 14 de septiembre es la fecha de la dedicación de la iglesia. Durante la revisión del calendario, la fiesta se trasladó del 3 de mayo al 14 de septiembre. Sin embargo, México y algunas otras regiones latinoamericanas solicitaron a Roma que mantuviera el día 3 de mayo como Fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz.

Aquí está la oración que recitó el obispo de Jerusalén, San Macario, para confirmar la verdadera cruz a través del milagro de curación de una mujer:

“Oh Señor, que por la Pasión de tu único Hijo en la cruz, te dignaste restaurar la salvación a la humanidad, y que incluso ahora has inspirado a tu esclava Helena a buscar el madero bendito en el que fue clavado el autor de nuestra salvación, muéstranos claramente cuál fue, entre las tres cruces, la que fue levantada para tu gloria. Distinguirla de aquellas que sólo servían para una ejecución común. Que esta mujer que ahora agoniza regrese de las puertas de la muerte tan pronto como sea tocada por el leño de la salvación”.

¡Te adoramos, oh Cristo, y te bendecimos, porque con tu santa cruz redimiste al mundo!
