Happy Sunday!

Around this time of year I am often asked: Is it okay to celebrate Halloween? The short answer is yes, it is a Catholic Holy Day of obligation. The word "Halloween" comes from a combination of two words in the English language's history. The word "hallow" means "holy" while the word "e'en" represents a shortening of the word "evening." The word "hallows" means "holy ones" or "saints." Thus "Hallow-e'en" or "Hallows' Eve" refers to "The Eve of All Saints."

Our secular society has commercialized this Holy Day to mean something different. The subtle perversion should be obvious to loyal hearts who offer due worship to God with fitting praises and adoration. Turn to the Catechism #2110-2117 to clarify and help understand the direction of our hearts. Always refrain from glamorizing anything that has to do with superstition, witches, witchcraft, sorcery, divinations, magic, and the occult. This is the work of the Evil One who tries to destroy all that is good, true and beautiful.

As Catholics in the secular society, we have an opportunity to be witnesses of the faith. On the eve of this great solemnity to commemorate All Saints, we strive to live virtuous and holy lives. This addresses the custom of dressing up. You will find wonderful examples of saints to imagine ourselves living a life for Christ. When we have a proper understanding of venerating the saints, then this naturally leads us to the One True God whom the saints adore and glorify. The path also reminds us of our mortality which reminds us of the four last things: death, judgment, heaven and hell. A headstone or a skull can be a visible reminder of this reality. The next day on Nov 2, we commemorate all the faithful departed. A special Candlelight Mass will be offered on Nov 2 at 6:00pm.

This week is about remembering the dead which includes the martyrs, saints and all the faithful departed. May you have a blessed All Hallows’ Tide and keep it rooted in the Catholic faith!

¡Feliz domingo!

Por esta época del año me suelen preguntar: ¿Está bien celebrar Halloween? La respuesta corta es sí, es un día santo católico de obligación. La palabra "Halloween" proviene de una combinación de dos palabras en la historia del idioma inglés. La palabra "Hallow" significa "santo", mientras que la palabra "e'en" representa una abreviatura de la palabra "vispera". La palabra "Hallows" significa "santos."

Así, "Hallow-e'en" o "Hallows' Eve" se refiere a "La víspera de Todos los Santos". Nuestra sociedad secular ha comercializado este Día Santo para que signifique algo diferente. La sutil perversión debería ser obvia para los corazones leales que ofrecen la debida adoración a Dios con alabanzas y adoración apropiadas. Acuda al Catecismo #2110-2117 para aclarar y ayudar a comprender la dirección de nuestro corazón. Abstenerse siempre de glamorizar cualquier cosa que tenga que ver con superstición, brujas, brujería, hechicería, adivinaciones, magia, Santa Muerte, mal de ojo, curanderos y lo oculto. Esta es la obra de Satanás que intenta destruir todo lo que es bueno, verdadero y bello.

Como católicos en la sociedad secular, tenemos la oportunidad de ser testigos de la fe. En vísperas de esta gran solemnidad para conmemorar a Todos los Santos, nos esforzamos por vivir una vida virtuosa y santa. Esto aborda la costumbre de disfrazarse. Encontrarás maravillosos ejemplos de santos para imaginarnos viviendo una vida para Cristo. Cuando tenemos una comprensión adecuada de cómo venerar a los santos, esto nos lleva naturalmente al Único Dios Verdadero a quien los santos adoran y glorifican. El camino también nos recuerda nuestra mortalidad, que nos recuerda las cuatro últimas cosas: la muerte, el juicio, el cielo y el infierno. Una lápida o una calavera pueden ser un recordatorio visible de esta realidad. Al día siguiente, 2 de noviembre, conmemoramos a todos los fieles difuntos. Se ofrecerá una misa especial con velas el 2 de noviembre a las 6:00 p. m. Esta semana se trata de recordar a los muertos, lo que incluye a los mártires, los santos y todos los fieles difuntos.

¡Que tengas una bendita Todos los Santos y la mantengas arraigada en la fe católica!
