Happy Sunday!

This past week we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ pontificate. He was elected Pope on March 13, 2013. One of the most exhilarating moments of my life was being present in St. Peter’s Square that night. I was in my first year at the North American College in Rome. The seminary had moved evening prayer up once the election began so that we could be in St. Peter’s Square by the time the evening smoke came from the little chimney stout on the Sistine Chapel. The smoke would be black if no pope had been elected and white if there was a new pope. I was standing right in the middle of the square when white smoke came up. The whole piazza started cheering and everyone rushed forward to be as close to the balcony as possible. The balcony is a balcony on St. Peter’s Basilica, situated right above the main entrance to the basilica. Immediately below it is an image of Jesus handing the keys of the kingdom of Heaven to St. Peter.

This is where the new pope came out for the first time to greet the world. About an hour passed from the time the smoke went up to the pope’s arrival on the balcony. That hour in between was incredible. The whole square would chant “Viva il papa!” or “Long live the Pope!”. In the months before I had the opportunity to see Pope Benedict XVI at his Sunday angelus address, over and over the crowds had then chanted “Benedetto!” This new chant, “Viva il papa!” had a deep significance for me. It was clear that while no one in the square knew who the new pope was, they did know that the See of Peter had once more been filled. It was remarkable to consider that without knowing who the pope was, what he would be like, where he came from, or any other detail, the crowd was pleased that a new successor to St. Peter had been elected and we would soon find out. I would like to invite you to offer three Hail Mary’s for Pope Francis as he leads the Church.

Today is typically the Feast of St. Joseph but since it falls on a Sunday during Lent it is transferred to Monday. As we pray for Pope Francis we entrust the Church once more to the care of St. Joseph who is the Patron of the Universal Church. We pray that as St. Joseph lovingly cared for the Holy Family, he will continue to offer his prayerful support for the faithfulness of Holy Mother Church to Jesus Christ.

¡Feliz domingo!

La semana pasada, celebramos el décimo aniversario del pontificado del Papa Francisco. Fue elegido Papa el 13 de marzo de 2013. Uno de los momentos más emocionantes de mi vida fue estar presente en la Plaza de San Pedro esa noche. Estaba en mi primer año en el North American College en Roma. El seminario había adelantado la oración de la tarde una vez que comenzaron las elecciones para que pudiéramos estar en la Plaza de San Pedro cuando saliera el humo de la pequeña chimenea de la Capilla Sixtina. El humo sería negro si no se hubiera elegido ningún papa y blanco si hubiera un nuevo papa. Estaba parado justo en el medio de la plaza cuando salió humo blanco. Toda la plaza comenzó a vitorear y todos corrieron hacia adelante para estar lo más cerca posible del balcón. El balcón es un balcón de la basílica de San Pedro, situado justo encima de la entrada principal de la basílica. Inmediatamente debajo, hay una imagen de Jesús entregando las llaves del reino de los cielos a San Pedro. Aquí es donde el nuevo Papa salió por primera vez a saludar al mundo. Pasó cerca de una hora desde que subió el humo hasta la llegada del Papa al balcón. Esa hora intermedia fue increíble. Toda la plaza coreaba “¡Viva il papa!” o “¡Viva el Papa!”. En los meses anteriores, tuve la oportunidad de ver al Papa Benedicto XVI en su discurso del ángelus dominical, una y otra vez la multitud había cantado "¡Benedetto!" Este nuevo canto, “¡Viva il papa!” tenía un profundo significado para mí. Estaba claro que, si bien nadie en la plaza sabía quién era el nuevo Papa, sí sabían que la Sede de Pedro se había llenado una vez más. Fue notable considerar que sin saber quién era el Papa, cómo sería, de dónde venía, ni ningún otro detalle, la multitud se alegraba de que se hubiera elegido un nuevo sucesor de San Pedro y pronto lo sabríamos. . Me gustaría invitarlos a ofrecer tres Avemarías por el Papa Francisco mientras dirige la Iglesia.

Hoy es típicamente la Fiesta de San José, pero como cae en domingo durante la Cuaresma, se transfiere al lunes. Mientras oramos por el Papa Francisco, encomendamos la Iglesia una vez más al cuidado de San José, quien es el Patrono de la Iglesia Universal. Oramos para que, como San José cuidó con amor a la Sagrada Familia, continúe ofreciendo su apoyo en oración por la fidelidad de la Santa Madre Iglesia a Jesucristo.
