Happy Sunday!

This Sunday we celebrate the 3rd Sunday of Lent and hear from the Gospel according to John about the woman at the well. St. John always has great profundity in his writings and invites the reader to contemplate the mysteries of redemption by plunging into the words of Jesus. The scene is set up with Jesus experiencing thirst after his journey. His disciples have gone to town to look for food and he meets a woman coming at midday to draw water. This was an unusual circumstance since it was most typical to draw water in the morning before the heat of the day. But this woman is ostracized from the community due to her choice to live in adultery. Jesus as always sees through her sinfulness to invite her to live in freedom. One’s sin is never their identity.

For the people of the town they would have seen her sin and equated her with said sin. Jesus however, sees the sin she is in and invites her to leave it behind. He wants to remind her of true dignity, that sin has as much power over her as she gives it. When Jesus tells the woman her sin something shocking happens. She does not get mad or upset, rather she runs back to the town and says this, “Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Christ?” Jesus has just finished shedding light on her sins and invited her back to freedom from sin and she gratefully accepts. This is always a beautiful reminder that when the Gospel is shared appropriately it brings gratitude and freedom. Maybe each of us sit at the well with Jesus and draw from the living waters he desires to give to us.

I want to extend another big thanks to our Fish Fry volunteers. It takes a lot of people to make it such a wonderful event and I am grateful to each volunteer for the various roles they play. I’m always glad meeting people from all over the Valley and the country on Friday nights. I’ve even met a few folks from Canada who winter in Phoenix and make an effort to come to our Fish Fry. This is a beautiful testament to our parish and each of you. Thank you! I hope everyone has a great week! Know of my prayers!

¡Feliz domingo!

Este domingo celebramos el tercer domingo de Cuaresma y escuchamos el Evangelio según Juan sobre la mujer junto al pozo. San Juan tiene siempre una gran profundidad en sus escritos e invita al lector a contemplar los misterios de la redención sumergiéndose en las palabras de Jesús. La escena se configura con Jesús experimentando sed después de su viaje. Sus discípulos han ido al pueblo a buscar comida y se encuentra con una mujer que viene al mediodía a sacar agua Esta fue una circunstancia inusual ya que lo más típico era sacar agua por la mañana antes del calor del día. Pero esta mujer es excluida de la comunidad debido a su elección de vivir en adulterio. Jesús, como siempre, ve a través de su pecaminosidad para invitarla a vivir en libertad. El pecado de uno nunca es su identidad. Para la gente del pueblo, la habrían visto pecar y la equipararían con dicho pecado. Jesús, sin embargo, ve el pecado en el que se encuentra y la invita a dejarlo atrás. Quiere recordarle la verdadera dignidad, que el pecado tiene tanto poder sobre ella como ella se lo da. Cuando Jesús le dice a la mujer su pecado, sucede algo impactante. Ella no se enfada ni se molesta, pero que vuelve corriendo al pueblo y dice esto: “Ven a ver a un hombre que me contó todo lo que he hecho. ¿Es posible que sea el Cristo? Jesús acaba de terminar de arrojar luz sobre sus pecados y la invita a volver a la libertad del pecado y ella acepta con gratitud. Este es siempre un hermoso recordatorio de que cuando el Evangelio se comparte apropiadamente, trae gratitud y libertad. Tal vez cada uno de nosotros nos sentemos junto al pozo con Jesús y saquemos de las aguas vivas que él desea darnos.

Quiero extender otro gran agradecimiento a nuestros voluntarios de Pescado Frito. Se necesita mucha gente para que sea un evento tan maravilloso y estoy agradecido con cada voluntario por los diversos roles que desempeñan. Siempre me alegra conocer gente de todo el Valle y el país los viernes por la noche. Incluso he conocido a algunas personas de Canadá que pasan el invierno en Phoenix y hacen un esfuerzo por venir a nuestro Pescado Frito. Este es un hermoso testimonio de nuestra parroquia y de cada uno de ustedes. ¡Gracias!
