Happy Sunday!

As we conclude this Jubilee year of 2025 and cross the thresholds of the New Year 2026, the Church invites us to begin not with resolutions alone, but with relationships with God and with one another. The Word of God given to us this weekend offers a beautiful and challenging vision of family life, discipleship, and hope as we step forward together.

We hear in the Book of Sirach a tender yet demanding call to honor our parents, to care for them with patience and gratitude, and to recognize that love within the family is holy ground. As a new year begins, this wisdom reminds us that faith is lived first at home. Kindness, forgiveness, and reverence for one another are not small virtues, they are powerful acts that shape the future.

What better way to respond with Saint Paul, in his Letter to the Colossians, as he urges us to “put on” compassion, humility, meekness, and patience. These are not abstract ideals, but daily choices. As we look ahead to 2026, imagine what our parish, our families, and our world might look like if we truly let “the peace of Christ control our hearts” and allowed His word to dwell in us richly. Gratitude, Paul tells us, is the hallmark of the Christian life—and gratitude is a wonderful way to begin a new year.

Our gospel from Matthew presents us with the Holy Family on the move, fleeing danger, trusting God in uncertainty, and beginning again in a new place. Even at the start of Jesus’ earthly life, we see that faith does not remove hardship, but it does give direction, courage, and hope. Many of us enter this new year carrying worries, losses, or unanswered questions. The Holy Family reminds us that God is present even in displacement and fear, quietly guiding us toward life.

What are we to make of this new year? I invite you to begin 2026 with trust. Trust that God is already at work in your family. Trust that the virtues we practice such as love, forgiveness, patience will bear fruit. Trust that, like the Holy Family, we are never walking alone. May this new year be filled with the peace of Christ, the warmth of family love, and the confidence that God is leading us, step by step, into His promise.

¡Feliz domingo!

Al concluir este año jubilar de 2025 y cruzar el umbral del nuevo año 2026, la Iglesia nos invita a comenzar no solo con propósitos, sino con relaciones con Dios y entre nosotros. La Palabra de Dios que se nos ofrece este fin de semana nos brinda una visión hermosa y desafiante de la vida familiar, el discipulado y la esperanza al avanzar juntos.

En el Libro de Sirácida escuchamos una tierna pero exigente llamada a honrar a nuestros padres, a cuidarlos con paciencia y gratitud, y a reconocer que el amor dentro de la familia es terreno sagrado. Al comenzar un nuevo año, esta sabiduría nos recuerda que la fe se vive primero en casa. La bondad, el perdón y el respeto mutuo no son pequeñas virtudes, sino actos poderosos que dan forma al futuro.

¿Qué mejor manera de responder que con San Pablo, en su Carta a los Colosenses, cuando nos exhorta a “revestirnos” de compasión, humildad, mansedumbre y paciencia? No se trata de ideales abstractos, sino de decisiones cotidianas. De cara al 2026, imaginemos cómo serían nuestra parroquia, nuestras familias y nuestro mundo si realmente “que en sus corazones reine la paz de Cristo” y permitiéramos que Su palabra morara en nosotros abundantemente. La gratitud, nos dice Pablo, es el sello distintivo de la vida cristiana, y la gratitud es una forma maravillosa de comenzar un nuevo año.

El evangelio de Mateo nos presenta a la Sagrada Familia en movimiento, huyendo del peligro, confiando en Dios en la incertidumbre y comenzando de nuevo en un lugar nuevo. Incluso al comienzo de la vida terrenal de Jesús, vemos que la fe no elimina las dificultades, pero sí da dirección, valor y esperanza. Muchos de nosotros entramos en este nuevo año cargados de preocupaciones, pérdidas o preguntas sin respuesta. La Sagrada Familia nos recuerda que Dios está presente incluso en el desplazamiento y el miedo, guiándonos silenciosamente hacia la vida.

¿Qué podemos esperar de este nuevo año? Les invito a comenzar el 2026 con confianza. Confianza en que Dios ya está obrando en vuestra familia. Confianza en que las virtudes que practicamos, como el amor, el perdón y la paciencia, darán fruto. Confianza en que, al igual que la Sagrada Familia, nunca caminamos solos. Que este nuevo año esté lleno de la paz de Cristo, la calidez del amor familiar y la confianza en que Dios nos guía, paso a paso, hacia su promesa.
