Summer Reading

Dear Friends,

Summer is a great time for reading. Remember summer reading lists from school? I used to ride my bike down to the library in the first weeks of break and check out all the books I was supposed to read. Then I would find other books, too. Remember browsing the shelves? Then I would set up and read and read until all the summer reading was done. After that I was free to read on my own and what I liked.

I liked reading adventure stories most of all. One of them was a book called Dove about a sixteen-year-old boy who sailed a small boat around the world alone. I think I must have been thirteen or fourteen when I read it because I remember thinking that I had some time to organize a similar adventure of my own.

Well, I never did sail around the world alone, but I would still say that my life has had its share of adventure. The biggest adventure of all was becoming Catholic with my family back in 2007. See what reading leads to? You never can tell.

Two books that I would recommend to you are An Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales and Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross. These two spiritual classics are well worth the investment. Now that it is summer, why not try something new to read?

Queridos amigos,

El verano es un buen momento para leer. ¿Recuerdas las listas de lectura de verano de la escuela? Solía andar en bicicleta hasta la biblioteca en las primeras semanas de vacaciones y sacar todos los libros que se suponía que debía leer. Luego encontraría otros libros también. ¿Recuerdas navegar por los estantes? Luego me preparaba y leía y leía hasta terminar toda la lectura del verano. Después de eso tuve la libertad de leer por mi cuenta y lo que me gustaba.

Me gustaba leer historias de aventuras sobre todo. Uno de ellos era un libro llamado Dove sobre un chico de dieciséis años que navegaba solo en un pequeño bote alrededor del mundo. Creo que debía tener trece o catorce años cuando lo leí porque recuerdo haber pensado que tenía algo de tiempo para organizar una aventura similar por mi cuenta.

Bueno, nunca navegué solo alrededor del mundo, pero aun así diría que mi vida ha tenido su parte de aventuras. La aventura más grande de todas fue convertirme en católico con mi familia en 2007. ¿Ves a dónde conduce la lectura? Nunca se sabe.

Dos libros que te recomendaría son Introducción a la vida devota de San Francisco de Sales y Noche oscura del alma de San Juan de la Cruz. Estos dos clásicos espirituales bien valen la inversión. Ahora que es verano, ¿por qué no probar algo nuevo para leer?
