Pentecost Sunday

05-28-2023Pastor's LetterFr. Oliver Vietor

Dear Friends,

Monday the 29th will be Memorial Day, and while it is not a Church holy day, it is a day well worth observing. I have memories of many years of remembering those who have died in the service of our Country. And love of our Country is certainly part of love for our neighbor. Many years we have visited cemeteries, typically the VA cemetery, of course. There is a Vietor there. But one year we went to another cemetery, a Catholic cemetery. We pushed the stroller along the uneven ground (the kids were younger then) and read the stone markers. We thought about those who had died and of our hope of heaven.

And then, suddenly, water came blasting from everywhere! The sprinklers had gone off. But to us it felt like a baptism, like the sprinkling with holy water at the Easter Masses. We ran along pushing the bouncing stroller and laughed and rejoiced for a few precious moments while the water came all around. Well, that is great memory now, but the truth remains today that we are bound together with the dead; we are really all one family. And in Christ we all have one hope.

Maybe this afternoon or tomorrow you and your family can find some time to visit a cemetery, or, if not, to remember Memorial Day in some fitting way. Thanks be to God for all those who have gone before us.

God bless,

Fr. Vietor

DEL VICARIO PARROQUIAL

Queridos amigos,

Padre Vietor
