Happy Sunday!

It is great to be in the season of Advent! Last Sunday began the new liturgical year as we anticipate the coming of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem. The prayers of the Mass, the antiphons, and readings are full of joyful expectation.

Last weekend in my homily I mentioned a few books that might be helpful Advent spiritual reading. The first, and maybe my favorite, is by Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI). It is his short book “Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives”. This is a wonderful book diving into the infancy narratives of St. Matthew and St. Luke. Because of its length, it is very possible to finish in the Advent season. Another book that only touches briefly on the infancy narratives but is still very powerful is Romano Guardini’s classic, “The Lord”. The book as a whole follows the life of Jesus in the Gospels and is very rich in content. Similarly, Fulton Sheen’s book, “The Life of Christ” is another volume I recommend that comments on the Gospels from beginning to end. Another author, whom I greatly admire and you’ve heard me mention before is Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis. His first volume of “Fire of Mercy: Heart of the Word” begins by exploring the infancy narrative according to St. Matthew. His work is clearly the fruit of someone who has prayed often with the Gospels. I of course recommend reading and re-reading the infancy narratives of St. Matthew and St. Luke themselves. If you prefer to read them with a commentary, the Navarre Commentary is always very insightful.

This weekend after all the Masses we are hosting a retirement celebration for Jean Green. I mentioned a few weeks ago that Jean has decided to retire after 17 years working in our wonderful parish. She has been responsible for coordinating weddings, funerals, liturgies, church decorating, and much more. We are so grateful for all that she has done for the parish these many years. Please stop by Santa Maria Hall after Mass this weekend to wish her well in this next step of her journey and thank her for her many years of service.

2ER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO

¡Es genial estar en la temporada de Adviento! El domingo pasado comenzó el nuevo año litúrgico mientras anticipamos la venida de Jesucristo en Belén. Las oraciones de la Misa, las antífonas y las lecturas están llenas de expectativas alegres. El fin de semana pasado, en mi homilía, mencioné algunos libros que podrían ser útiles como lectura espiritual de Adviento. El primero, y quizás mi favorito, es de Joseph Ratzinger (Papa Benedicto XVI). Es su libro breve “Jesús de Nazaret: las narraciones de la infancia”. Este es un libro maravilloso que se sumerge en las narraciones de la infancia de San Mateo y San Lucas. Por su longitud, es muy posible que termine en el tiempo de Adviento. Otro libro que solo toca brevemente las narraciones de la infancia pero que sigue siendo muy poderoso es el clásico de Romano Guardini, “El Señor”. El libro en su conjunto sigue la vida de Jesús en los Evangelios y es muy rico en contenido. De manera similar, el libro de Fulton Sheen, "La vida de Cristo" es otro volumen que recomiendo que comenta sobre los Evangelios de principio a fin. Otro autor, a quien admiro mucho y me has oído mencionar antes, es Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis. Su primer volumen de “Fuego de Misericordia: Corazón de la Palabra” comienza explorando la narrativa de la infancia según San Mateo. Su obra es claramente el fruto de alguien que ha orado muchas veces con los Evangelios. Yo, por supuesto, recomiendo leer y releer las narraciones de la infancia de San Mateo y San Lucas mismos. Si prefieres leerlos comentados, el Comentario de Navarra siempre es muy esclarecedor.

Este fin de semana, después de todas las misas, celebraremos la jubilación de Jean Green. Mencioné hace unas semanas que Jean decidió retirarse después de 17 años trabajando en nuestra maravillosa parroquia. Ha sido responsable de coordinar bodas, funerales, liturgias, decoración de la iglesia y mucho más. Estamos muy agradecidos por todo lo que ha hecho por la parroquia durante estos años. Pase por el salón Santa María después de la Misa este fin de semana para desearle lo mejor en este próximo paso de su viaje y agradecerle por sus muchos años de servicio.
