A few days ago, my iphone gave me a weekly message: “Last week, your total screen time was down 17%.” I thought, good for me! But the message continued: “You averaged 5 hours and 23 minutes of screen time.” Yikes.

Where do we place our attention? The Prophet Isaiah says, “For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” God wants us to be His learners, people who grow through a steady stream of divine instruction. But if you’re like me, you spend way too much time at the feet of the wrong teachers.

Our phones can help fruitfully re-direct our attention. It’s amazing how many great Catholic Bible studies, classes, podcasts, and soul-forming material is accessible there. This coming new year let’s use our phones to be a little “Zion” or “Jerusalem” — a place we go for wisdom and instruction, and not just endless data and entertainment.

New year challenge: Grab your phone. Start consuming some source of Catholic instruction each week to help you become a better student of Jesus. Keep it going into 2023. If our screen time helps us learn true wisdom, it will be a great use of time.

Primer domingo de Adviento 2022

Hace unos días, mi iPhone me envió un mensaje semanal: "La semana pasada, tu tiempo total frente a la pantalla se redujo un 17 %". Pensé, ¡bien por mí! Pero el mensaje continuó: “Tuviste un promedio de 5 horas y 23 minutos de tiempo frente a la pantalla”. ¡Ay!

¿Dónde ponemos nuestra atención? El profeta Isaías dice: “Porque de Sión saldrá la instrucción, y de Jerusalén la palabra del Señor”. Dios quiere que seamos Sus aprendices, personas que crezcan a través de un flujo constante de instrucción divina. Pero si eres como yo, pasas demasiado tiempo a los pies de los profesores equivocados.

Nuestros teléfonos pueden ayudar a redirigir fructíferamente nuestra atención. Es sorprendente la cantidad de excelentes estudios bíblicos católicos, clases, podcasts y material para la formación del alma que se puede acceder allí. Este próximo año nuevo, usemos nuestros teléfonos para ser un pequeño "Sión" o "Jerusalén", un lugar al que vamos en busca de sabiduría e instrucción, y no solo de datos y entretenimiento sin fin.

Desafío de año nuevo: toma tu teléfono. Comience a consumir alguna fuente de instrucción católica cada semana para ayudarlo a convertirse en un mejor estudiante de Jesús. Continúe hasta 2023. Si nuestro tiempo frente a la pantalla nos ayuda a aprender la verdadera sabiduría, será un gran uso del tiempo.
