Take the Lowest Place

Happy Sunday!

The first words we hear in our readings this week strike us with a simple directness, “My child, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.” Gifts can run out, but the humble person increases in virtue and draws out charity from others.

This first reading is from the book of Sirach, a book of wisdom. Throughout this book the reader is faced with what can be known by reason and elevated by faith. Thus, in our reading we hear about the exaltation of humility, a theme that appears more directly in our Gospel. Each Christian is invited to peer into their own hearts to question their motivations. “Do I seek the praise of others? Do I desire to be noticed?” And as in the Gospel, we are invited to go and “take the lowest place”.

The way of the Christian is the way of simplicity and humility. This week we can ask for the grace to grow in humility and always take the lowest place. As always at this time of year, there is a lot happening in the parish. I am grateful to our wonderful staff who have been working so hard over the summer as they prepare for programs with our youth and adults. I want to extend a special word of thanks to all of our volunteers who give so graciously of their time to support the work of evangelization in our parish. I know we are still in need of many volunteers, especially catechists for our Religious Education program. Please consider volunteering your time this year to walk with our children and families as they prepare for Sacraments.

Next weekend we will begin registration for men interested in joining the Porters of St. Joseph. Thank you to all men for being willing to serve our parish community in this way. The Porters of St. Joseph will add a level of security to the parish during Sunday Masses and be trained in self-defense and deescalation tactics to help keep St. Joan of Arc a safe and peaceful community

Know of my prayers for each of you and have a great week!

Christ’s peace,

DE NUESTRO PASTOR

¡Feliz domingo!

Padre Connealy
