Happy Easter!

Jesus Christ is risen! A very happy Easter to each and everyone of you. This is the great solemnity that follows upon the 40 days of Lent and begins the 50 days of the Easter season. We spent 40 days preparing ourselves through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Now the Church invites us to celebrate for 50 days in the joy of the risen Lord.

What exactly do we celebrate? That the ancient curse has been lifted. When Adam and Eve sinned, the gates of heaven were closed to them. While the priests of the Old Testament would offer sacrifices of atonement, they were never enough to vanquish death and sin entirely. Jesus, by offering Himself as the sinless offering, the pure, unblemished lamb, has defeated death entirely. What we celebrate at Easter is the fact that sin and death do not have the final word. In dying and rising from the dead, Jesus Christ has released us from the bonds of sin so that we can know true freedom. This is what we experience in baptism when we are freed from original sin and in confession when our sins are forgiven. It is for this reason that St. Paul writes, “‘Death is swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” We rejoice in the victory of the risen Christ who has offered us his divine life by dying for us. While we enjoy the beginning of the Easter season, I pray that it will be an opportunity to continue to deepen your life of prayer and reception of the Sacraments.

¡Felices Pascuas!

¡Jesucristo ha resucitado! Muy felices pascuas para todos y cada uno de ustedes. Esta es la gran solemnidad que sigue a los 40 días de Cuaresma y comienza los 50 días del tiempo de Pascua. Pasamos 40 días preparándonos a través de la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. Ahora, la Iglesia nos invita a celebrar durante 50 días en la alegría del Señor resucitado.

¿Qué celebramos exactamente? Que la antigua maldición ha sido levantada. Cuando Adán y Eva pecaron, las puertas del cielo se les cerraron. Mientras que los sacerdotes del Antiguo Testamento ofrecían sacrificios de expiación, nunca fueron suficientes para vencer por completo a la muerte y al pecado. Jesús, al ofrecerse a sí mismo como la ofrenda sin pecado, el cordero puro y sin mancha, ha vencido completamente a la muerte. Lo que celebramos en Pascua es el hecho de que el pecado y la muerte no tienen la última palabra. Al morir y resucitar de entre los muertos, Jesucristo nos ha liberado de las ataduras del pecado para que podamos conocer la verdadera libertad. Esto es lo que experimentamos en el bautismo cuando somos libres del pecado original y en la confesión cuando nuestros pecados son perdonados. Es por esta razón que San Pablo escribe, “La muerte ha sido vencida. ¿Dónde está, muerte, tu victoria? ¿Dónde está tu aguijón? Porque lo que provoca la muerte es el pecado y lo que da fuerza al pecado es la ley. ¡Demos gracias a Dios, que nos ha dado la victoria por nuestro Señor Jesucristo!” Nos regocijamos en la victoria de Cristo resucitado que nos ha ofrecido su vida divina al morir por nosotros. Mientras disfrutamos del comienzo de la temporada de Pascua, oro para que sea una oportunidad para continuar profundizando su vida de oración y recepción de los Sacramentos.
