Happy Feast of the Holy Family

12-26-2021Pastor's LetterFr. Dan Connealy

I pray everyone’s Christmas celebrations have begun well! The Church continues to celebrate with great solemnity the Octave of Christmas. Among other things that this means, is that each Mass from December 25th to January 1st includes the Gloria. It’s one way that the Church teaches us that Christmas is not a single day, but we celebrate with great joy for eight entire days. During these days, I hope you find ways to enjoy the good things of life, but also to deepen your relationship with the Lord, immersing yourselves in the fount of His love as you reflect on the Christmas mysteries.

As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family I want to share an excerpt from Bishop Olmsted’s Apostolic Exhortation “Complete My Joy”. He writes, “To this awe-inspiring truth—that the little icon of the family images the Trinitarian God in a unique way—we can add this: the Christian family is also the littlest living cell of the Church—the domestic church, in fact. This is another indicator of your dignity and the adventure of your mission! Your home is, and is called to grow, as an outpost of the mission of the Church militant on earth, in union and service with your parish. ‘Thus, the little domestic Church, like the greater Church, needs to be constantly and intensely evangelized: hence its duty regarding permanent education in the faith…the family, like the Church, ought to be a place where the Gospel is transmitted and from which the Gospel radiates…the future of evangelization depends in great part on the Church of the home.’”

It is in the family that the Catholic Faith first develops and grows. We are blessed here to have many wonderful families who make up our parish. Bishop Olmsted encourages you to be intentional about family life and sharing the faith as a family. To speak about the goodness of God, the redemptive power of Jesus Christ, and the life giving breath of the Holy Spirit. If these things are not spoken of they will have nothing to take root in. I encourage you, as we begin this new year, to commit yourselves to continuing to grow in the Catholic Faith. I pray that all parents here will continue to share the joy of knowing Jesus Christ and the fullness of life He offers us. Know of my prayers and gratitude for each of you as you embrace your vocation and share the Gospel.
