The Importance of Quiet Time with God

Dear Friends,

When the children were little it was called “nap time.” When they got a bit older it was called “quiet time,” and so it has been ever since. The idea is that everyone has to go to his or her room for at least an hour and do something quiet. On one level, we all just need a break from each other and from the noise of a busy house. For parents of little children, it breaks up the afternoon and gives the children a schedule. But even as the children get older, quiet time is important. Our college age children come home and ask, “When is quiet time?” They have learned to desire the peace and quiet; it has become a habit for them. I have said that if I were king of the world and could make it so, everyone would have to stop what they are doing and read a good book for at least one hour every day. This is because ultimately quiet time is good for all of us.

In the church we talk about spending quiet time with God, or we talk about keeping a holy hour. It is the same idea; it is quiet time, or as we say, prayer time. When it comes to praying, I usually counsel people to start small. And I usually recommend the morning as the best time. Set aside five minutes at first, then make it ten, and so on. Make the sign of the cross and read a little scripture or something else worthwhile like a good devotional book. Then think about it. Then listen to whatever God has to say. Then let your prayers be known to God and finish with an Our Father or a Hail Mary or something. The Hail Holy Queen and St. Michael Prayer are also very good. There, that would be a good quiet time with God. Of course it can vary; this is just a basic outline and you can build on it as it suits you. After a while, you may want to add in some adoration time. That would be great. That is true quiet time with God.

The fact is that quiet time is important for everyone. At a minimum, we need a chance to be still, to recollect ourselves, to let our minds and imaginations wander. Children need to learn how to entertain themselves. But more than this, we all need quiet time with God. He speaks in silence. We need to learn how to pray and how to enter into that silent place with God. If we start small, then over time, it will become a habit. Then we will ask with the college kids, “When is quiet time? Can we have quiet time now?” Over time, we will develop our interior life and God will come to meet us there.

Queridos amigos,
