The Influence of Surrounding Culture

Dear Friends,

Recently we had a reading in daily Mass from the book of Judges. It was about how the people of God turned away from the Lord and worshiped other gods. This seems incredible. After all, the people had been led out of Egypt; they had seen the miracles; they had entered into the covenant; and finally they had entered the promised land. How could they turn away after all of this? The answer is that the surrounding culture corrupted them. When they entered the promised land, they were supposed to clear out all the peoples who had been there. But they did not do this. They cleared out some of the peoples but not all of them. Those that remained worshiped false gods and it was these that lured the people astray. It was the surrounding culture.

We can learn from this just how strong an influence the surrounding culture can have. If it was strong enough to turn aside the people of God then, it could very well turn us aside today. At a minimum, it influences us and affects our devotion. We may not be living the faith as we could if it were not for the influence of the culture pulling at us. This is an issue that we need to be examining. It does not mean that everything from the culture is bad or that we need somehow to try and remove ourselves completely from the culture – we simply could not do this. We live in the world. But we try not to be of the world. We need to examine how culture affects us and what aspects of the culture we especially need to be on guard against.

The number one issue, it seems to me, is the media. The shows we watch, the movies we see, the phone and computer applications that we use, the things we read – all of these make a huge impact on our lives. Media is just incredibly formative. And who is producing this media and what are their intentions? What do they intend their media to do to us? In what direction are they trying to lead us? These are all pressing questions that we need to be asking ourselves. (My advice is no social media whatsoever unless absolutely necessary for some good reason.) Families with children especially need to consider again what their children are being exposed to. Then, of course, there is the whole question of the schools and what they are teaching and what they are not teaching. Parents have a lot to contend with as they seek to raise their children well. All of us must do our part to support them.

More than anything we need to create and sustain a culture of our own. We need to make a place where true Catholic values shape who we are and what we do. The first place is our homes, and a second place is here at St. Joan of Arc. This is a place we can come and be ourselves. This is a place where we can grow to be what God intends us to be. This is where we can learn to draw a line and tell the culture, “This far, and no further.” May God bless us all in this parish and keep us ever more faithful to Him.

God bless,

Queridos amigos,

P. Vietor
