Hope and Courage

Greetings in Christ!

What a joy and grace it has been to serve as St. Joan of Arc’s Youth Minister this past year. I look forward to the graces our good and gracious God has in store for our upcoming year. Two words come to mind as I reflect back on this past year of Verso L’alto youth group- those words are hope and courage. I have a tremendous amount of hope in the future of our Church. Getting to journey and walk with the teens of St. Joan of Arc has been such an authentic source of hope to me. The ways the teens have opened their hearts to dive deeper into a relationship with Christ in the midst of some crazy and unpredictable times is absolutely incredible. It is a gift to have St. Joan of Arc as the patroness of our parish and to pray for her intercession as a youth group. She modeled courage in the face of adversity and strong faith despite what the threats were. Please join me in continuing to pray for St. Joan of Arc’s intercession for the teens in our youth group, that they may have the courage from the Holy Spirit to live out and share their faith.

Our youth group has had the opportunity to reflect on and build our knowledge of what God’s “Yes” means. We started off the first semester by inviting the teens to begin praying daily. We spoke of the unfathomable concept that the Maker of the universe and all of creation wants a personal and unique relationship with each and every one of us! Our amazing and faithful Core team has given so generously of their time and talents to accompany our teens in their pursuit of God. Throughout the semester, Core team leaders have given talks on different topics and themes, including, how to pray with scripture, the healing power of Confession, how God is the light in the midst of any darkness we encounter, how we can pray for our loved ones, their personal testimony, and many other topics. The teens have had the opportunity to spend time before Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration where we invited them to let God love them just as they are and to be embraced by His tender love and mercy. We had the wonderful opportunity to go on a retreat to Prescott where thirty teens and many Core team leaders spent time in God’s beautiful creation and listened to talks about faith, love, vocation, and surrendering one’s life to Christ. We equipped the teens with the tools to go back to their homes and schools and continue to live out of the abundance of graces God bestowed upon them while we were there. Father Connealy joined us, and we had Eucharistic Adoration, Reconciliation, and Mass, which many of the teens shared was their favorite part of the retreat. We are already beginning to plan more retreats for this upcoming year, as so many of the teens shared how impactful this retreat was in their faith life.

As many of you know, the translation of “Verso L’alto” is “To the Heights.” This term was coined by Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, a powerful intercessor for the youth. He died at the age of 24 and lived his life in a way that glorified God through everything that he did, whether that be serving the poor, going mountain climbing, or evangelizing his friends. We as a youth group strive to reach the heights of holiness by growing in authentic friendship, learning how to deepen our prayer lives centered in the Eucharist, and opening our hearts to respond boldly to God’s call. I am so grateful for the St. Joan of Arc parish and for all of your generosity in supporting the youth group whether that be with your donations in the second collection, volunteering to cook us a meal, donating a retreat scholarship, or most importantly for your prayers for the teens and leaders to grow closer to Christ. Know of my prayers for you all and may God continue to bless you!

In Him,
Mary Lenchner
