Meet Diaconate Candidate, Bill Schneider

Hello,

My name is Bill Schneider and I am a deacon candidate (currently as an Acolyte) here at St. Joan of Arc (SJA) parish. God willing, I am scheduled for ordination this coming November. My family and I are long time parishioners, with our children attending a total of 6 years at the wonderful preschool here at SJA. (My wife made sure I included how much we appreciated the preschool staff giving our children such a great start to their schooling). My youngest son is 10 years old and he has been an Altar Server here for about 6 months before the pandemic. I am probably a lot like many of you in that I really enjoy sports, reading, hiking, spending time with my family, and a good frozen strawberry margarita on a hot day. At home, I am our “pool guy” and keep the water sparkling for cannon balls! Some of you may know me as “Dr. Bill” while I have been completing my diaconate formation here at SJA. I make my living as a pediatric emergency room physician at Banner Children’s Hospital where I feel blessed to care for the most amazing children and their families.

I first felt called to the diaconate while on pilgrimage to Medjugorje over 25 years ago where my faith was renewed and my love for Our Lady, the Eucharist & the Church were deepened. It was there that I first heard a whisper in my heart regarding the diaconate and its profound call to servanthood. At the time, I knew very little about what a deacon was. Besides, I did not feel worthy (and still don’t for that matter) of such a calling and gift. Over time, that whisper became louder and more nagging, encouraging me to look into entering the deacon formation program. In 2013, after much prayer and discussion with my wife, I finally applied to the diaconate, and strangely enough, I was accepted. Nothing is impossible with God! Before I knew it, I was enrolled in the Kino classes and assigned to the 2020 Cohort. This journey has been incredible from the beginning. Formation is for both the husband and the wife and so over these past years we have had the honor to grow and learn with truly lovely and faithful Catholic couples in the Cohort. More importantly, our faith, marriage, and diaconate vocation have grown and been strengthened by the many prayers, holiness and support of the SJA parish community to which we are forever grateful.

The Diocese of Phoenix does an excellent job of preparing candidates to the diaconate. In fact, many dioceses around the country look to model our program because it is so thorough. My knowledge and love of our Catholic faith, liturgy, scripture and traditions have grown immensely! I am excited (and a little nervous) to start this new vocation to proclaim the Gospel and serve you and our parish as we witness to and share together our love for Jesus Christ while walking humbly with Our Lord and Savior.

I was recently asked, “What is the most important thing you learned about yourself during formation?” After a long pause I confessed, “I am a sinner who has been gazed upon by the eyes of Mercy and touched by the hands of sacrificial Love.” It is this Love and Mercy that I wish to humbly share with you as we journey together in Christ. Thank you for giving me this tremendous opportunity to be one of your deacons. May God Bless You.

Hola,
