The following article was written by Deacon Peter Auriemma to introduce to the parish our newly installed Acolytes who are on a religious journey towards being ordained as Deacons in the Catholic Church.

Bishop Olmsted officially installed Mr. Andy Lambros and Dr. William Schneider to the Ministry of Acolyte on Friday, August 23, at 6:30 pm in our Cathedral of Sts. Simon and Jude. Both of these SJA parishioners have been on a five-year Formation Journey leading to their Ordination to the Permanent Diaconate for the Diocese of Phoenix. Last year, they were installed to the Ministry of Lector, and the Ministry of Acolyte is the last step before their Ordination as Deacons, a year from this November. While all altar servers are usually referred to as acolytes, there are several duties and responsibilities which are reserved only for a duly Instituted Acolyte.

Like an altar server, the Instituted Acolyte's chief function is to assist the priest and deacon at the altar, and they are vested in an alb with a cincture. However, unlike an altar server, the Instituted Acolyte prepares the altar for the Eucharist if there is no deacon present. They are allowed to set up the Roman Missal for the priest and to turn its pages while the priest is praying and offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. They are preferred extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, which means that as an installed minister, they take preference over other extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion in distributing the Holy Eucharist. They are allowed to purify the sacred vessels after Communion at the credence table, in the absence of a deacon. They are also entrusted with the special privilege of publicly exposing and reposing the Blessed Sacrament for adoration by the faithful, although they may not offer the blessing with the Eucharist at Benediction. They are also entrusted with the training and ongoing formation of the other servers who assist at the altar.

El Obispo Olmsted instaló oficialmente al Sr. Andy Lambros y al Dr. William Schneider en el Ministerio de Acólitos el viernes 23 de agosto a las 6:30 pm en nuestra Catedral de los Santos. Simon y Jude. Ambos feligreses de la SJA han estado en un viaje de formación de cinco años que condujo a su ordenación al diaconado permanente de la diócesis de Phoenix. El año pasado, se instalaron en el Ministerio de Lector, y el Ministerio de Acólito es el último paso antes de su ordenación como diáconos, un año de spués de noviembre. Son preferidos ministros extraordinarios de la Sagrad a Comunión, lo que significa que, como ministro instalado, toman preferencia sobre otros ministros extraordinarios de la Sagrada Comunión en la distribución de la Sagrada Eucaristía. Se les permite purificar los vasos sagrados después de la Comunión en la mesa de la credencial, en ausencia de un diácono.
