Mass Etiquette: Part III of a III part series

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are blessed with a beautiful parish campus with many distinct areas.  The first that is of concern to you are the pews (where you pray) —a sacred space where we journey to God to receive the Eucharist.  We need to treat it that way.  Keep it clean for others—throw your nasty Kleenex’s and other trash away!  Put the books back and the kneelers up for the next Mass.  Also, the main body of the church where we celebrate Mass is not a children’s obstacle course or a train station where we visit with friends to catch up on the latest.   This is a place for prayer where silence is golden. Thankfully, we are blessed with a spacious Narthex and plaza for fellowship with members of the Body of Christ. Use this space for talking and building friendships.  I actually encourage it.

We have a beautiful chapel for prayer and devotion throughout the week.  We are blessed to have the St. John Paul II Adoration Chapel that is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week! I invite all of you to pray there and even sign up for an hour of adoration as a way to prepare for Holy Mass.  You can obtain a key fob by signing up online or filling out a form that can be found in the narthex or at the front office.

Remember that when Masses are filling up, please do not wait to be told to move in so that others can get a seat.  That is not very nice force people to have to climb over you. And men—if Mass is crowded and you have a seat, but an older person, a pregnant woman, or a person on crutches comes in later and there is not seat—Be a gentleman!  Give them your seat.  Outdo others in charity.

We need to talk about personal appearance at Holy Mass.  Sunday dress is your finest attire.  We always want to give our best for God.  Please turn the cell phones off unless you expect a call from God (don’t worry – He won’t call during Mass).  Most of you are very good at turning them off.   Lastly, leave the gum at home!  It doesn’t belong at Holy Mass or on the bottoms of the pews or outside on the ground!  As always, no food or drink (unless you absolutely must have water during Mass) in the church.

Our church is the House of God—it’s not a nightclub, a gym or a golf course.   We need to wear our best, whatever our best is when we come to Holy Mass.   Some tell me that they have to dress up all week, so on the weekends, they don’t dress up or shave—does that really make sense in light of what happens here? I have to acknowledge that many do realize what is taking place within these sacred walls and I applaud you.  Just an F.Y.I… You may be surprised and saddened to know that both men and women have told me that they struggle with purity because of the way people dress when they come to church—is dressing immodestly fair to others?  Are you an occasion of sins by what you wear?  Do you love those of the opposite sex to not be an occasion of sin?

Flip-flops are unacceptable foot attire. Ladies, watch the necklines, especially with the bowing that is required in the liturgy—I assure you, many people see things that they shouldn’t see at Holy Mass or anywhere but in the privacy of one’s own home!  Pray about liturgical modesty and make that modesty a gift to God.

Let us remember that our reverence or irreverence affects others and that external behavior affect internal holiness of the Body of Christ.  Let’s make and effort to be the best that we can be in this church, so that we can be the best we can be in the world that needs us… that need’s Our Lord.

God Bless,
Fr. Don Kline, V.F.

Don Kline, V.F.
