50th Anniversary of Humanae Vitae (Part III of III)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Why does the Church say no to contraception? In Msgr. Charles Pope's article entitled: "The "Fruits" of Contraception," we are reminded that Pope Paul VI predicted in Humanae Vitae many of the problems that our culture is facing as a result of using birth control.

Pope Paul VI predicted that the divorce rate would increase as the contraception mentality becomes more acceptable. Divorce rates have continued to rise and are currently around the 40 percent range. Pope Paul VI understood that marriage would suffer because of contraception. He wrote: "Let them first consider how easily this course of action could open wide the way for marital infidelity and a general lowering of moral standards."(HV 17).

Pope Paul VI predicted that sexual immorality would increase which has led to an increase in the number of abortions. The reason for the increase in the number of abortions should be obvious. Contraception often fails. Abortion tragically becomes the "contraception of last resort". Once again, as Pope Paul VI predicted, sexual immorality (promiscuity, cohabitation, pornography) dominates our culture and is directly connected to the increased numbers of abortion.

As the Hollywood scandals are brought to light, we see that women's dignity has suffered great harm. As Msgr. Pope acknowledges: "Their dignity as wives and mothers has been set aside in favor of the sexual pleasure they offer to men. Many modern men, no longer bound by marriage for sexual satisfaction, use women and discard them on a regular basis. Men "get what they want" and it seems that many women are willing to supply it rather freely. In this scenario, men win. Women are often left with STDs. They are often left with children they must support and raise alone. And as they get older and "less attractive" to men, they are often alone. I am not sure that this is dignity. Have women really benefited under this new morality, which contraception helped to usher in?

Some people believe that contraception will help prevent or even reduce STDs and AIDS. This is just not true. STDs have are increasing especially among young people who tend to be more sexually active. AIDS continues to show outrageously high percentages. Contraceptives do very little to solve the problem. Actually, contraception seems to encourage the spread of these diseases by promoting a false confidence and increased numbers of promiscuity.

Many studies show that there is an increasing rate of teenage pregnancy. This can lead to an increase in the number of single parent families, which is often linked to the increasing rate of poverty. As Msgr. Pope pointed out, "single motherhood is the chief cause of poverty in this country. Contraception encourages promiscuity. Promiscuity often leads to pregnancy at a young age. Youthful pregnancy often leads to single motherhood (absent fathers). Single motherhood often leads to welfare dependence and poverty. In our inner cities today, over 80 percent of homes are headed by single mothers. It is the single best predictor of poverty."

The final point in Msgr. Pope's article addresses the problem of lower birth rates. It is an indisputable fact that Europe's native population is decreasing while at the same time the Muslim population is increasing. We see a similar thing happening in the United States to both the white and African-American communities. The lower birthrates mean that there are many parishes and schools simply cannot remain open. I believe the lower birth rate also impacts the number of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Conclusion: Our population is dying at a faster rate than those being born.

Here is Msgr. Pope's conclusion which I believe is right on point: "Time will prove where wisdom lies. What have we learned over these decades of contraception? First, we have learned that it is a huge failure in meeting its promises; it has backfired, making things worse rather than better. Marriage, families, and children have all taken a huge hit. Bad behavior has been encouraged and all the bad consequences that flow from it are flourishing. Most people seem largely uninterested in this data. Hearts have become numb and minds have gone to sleep. I hope that you will consider this information thoughtfully and share it with others. Time has proven where wisdom lies. It is time to admit the obvious."

God bless,

50º aniversario de Humanae Vitae (Parte III de III)

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
