50th Anniversary of Humanae Vitae: Part I of III

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Is the Church wrong on contraception?

For many people, sexual pleasure is placed very high on the list of their priorities.  Since our culture has basically endorsed this sort of thinking, the Catholic Church’s teaching on contraception can seem old-fashioned or unnatural.  Many well-intentioned people argue that the Church’s teaching on being open to life not part of God’s original plan for the marital embrace (conjugal love).  It can be difficult for even faithful married Catholics to live as God intends them to live their vocation as husband and wife.

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of Humanae Vitae, the encyclical affirming the traditional Christian teaching on birth control. As we get closer to the anniversary (July 25th), I thought it might be good to revisit some of the challenges expressed in making this teaching of the Church a lived reality.

In 1968, Pope Paul VI issued his life-centered encyclical letter Humanae Vitae (Latin, "Human Life"), which reemphasized the Church’s constant teaching that it is always intrinsically wrong to use contraception to prevent new human beings from coming into existence.

What is Contraception?

Contraception is "any action which, either in anticipation of the conjugal act [sexual intercourse], or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible" (Humanae Vitae 14).

What are some ways that people block God’s plan for the conjugal act?

Some ways of contraception would include sterilization, condoms and other barrier methods, spermicides, coitus interruptus (withdrawal method), the Pill, Birth Control Sponge (Today Sponge), Birth Control Patch, Birth Control Vaginal Ring (NuvaRing), Birth Control Shot (Depo-Provera), Birth Control Implant (Implanon and Nexplanon), Female Condom, Cervical Cap (FemCap), Pull Out Method (Withdrawal), Morning-After Pill (Emergency Contraception), Sterilization for Women (Tubal Ligation), IUD, Vasectomy, Diaphragm, Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FAMs), Outercourse… just to name a few.

What is so wrong with contraception?

To state it simply: contraception is wrong because it’s a deliberate violation of the design God built into the human race. God created us to live a certain way. God's plan can also be viewed as "natural law." The natural law purpose or God’s plan for sex is procreation. There is also the incredible bond that strengthens the love between a husband and wife that happens when they engage in the marital embrace (conjugal act). God also created sex between a husband and wife to be a pleasurable experience. And when a couple are open to life and participate in the marital embrace they are given the possibility of creating a new life while strengthening the bond of intimacy, respect, and love between husband and wife.

Is there such a thing as an unnatural marital embrace (conjugal act) between a husband and wife?

Of course! The sexual pleasure within marriage becomes unnatural, and even harmful to the spouses, when it is used in a way that deliberately excludes the basic purpose of sex, which is procreation. God’s gift of the sex act, along with its pleasure and intimacy, must not be abused by deliberately frustrating its natural end—procreation.

50.º aniversario de Humanae Vitae: Parte I de III

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
