St. Joan of Arc

In every generation, Jesus has called upon men and women to literally be his hands and feet, to act on his behalf as his messenger and speak for him directly, either to his Church, to a specific culture or to the world at large. Those men and women who said “yes” to Christ and did what He asked them to do, accomplished the Will of God with his help in amazing ways. Many of them have been recognized officially by the Church for their heroic witness to Christ. We call them Saints.

Of all the Saints, few have captured the hearts and imaginations of people as the patroness of our parish, St. Joan of Arc. Most people know her story. She was born into a peasant farming family in northeastern France on January 6, 1412. At the time, the French were at war with England, and the English invaders controlled more than half of France. The French king could not even be crowned because the Cathedral where coronations took place was in the hands of their enemies. At the age of 13, Joan began to receive heavenly messages from St. Michael the Archangel, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret.

Over the next few years, she was told that she had to see that the French king was finally crowned and that she had to drive the English from France. At the age of 16, she left home and petitioned local leaders to take her to the uncrowned king. She was questioned by French Church leaders, and they believed her message was from God. She was given armor, a horse and a small troop of soldiers, and she began to win battles for France. She was called Jeanne la Pucelle – Joan the Maid. She modestly wore men’s clothes to preserve her purity, and she went into battle carrying a banner with the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary on it. Before each battle, she sent a message to the invaders: “Leave France while you can! God is fighting for France!” After each battle, she prayed with the dying and wept over the dead, on both sides. She stood next to the king when he was eventually crowned because of her victories, but while the French hailed her as their saintly heroine, the English hated her. She was eventually captured by the English, unjustly tried, and condemned as a witch, and she was burned alive on May 30, 1431. She was only 19 years old. At her trial she stated: “I would rather die than do something I know to be a sin or to be against God’s will.”

There are many things that Joan can teach us today. She shows us that patriotism, purity and modesty are Christian virtues, that we are to speak out against injustice and to fight evil in every form, that we are called to protect the weak and vulnerable and to forgive our enemies, and that we have to bring the names of Jesus and Mary to the world. Most importantly, she teaches us that we are all called to be saints. That doesn’t mean that we have to leave all behind and lead armies into battle as she did. When we were conceived, each of us was given our own unique, personal task to perform for Christ, and we were blessed with the talents needed to achieve what He wants us to do for Him. Our baptism and confirmation empowered us to achieve our personal task. Think of our unique talents as if Jesus has given each of us a basket containing the number of loaves and fishes that each of us needs to be his disciple in the world. Some have many and some have few. What we are given doesn’t matter. What counts is what we do with them. We can hold on to them, fearfully feeling that if we offer them back to Jesus, they are insufficient to achieve anything. Or…we can trust Him and generously offer them back to Jesus freely and with an open heart. When we do that, no matter how inadequate they may seem to us, in Jesus’ hands, miracles occur. Remember what He did with only five loaves and two fish!

Our parish is fortunate to have such a powerful patroness. Pray to St. Joan of Arc that we may realize whatever Jesus wants us to do for Him and His Church, as well as for the courage to respond to Him with our whole heart. Don’t hesitate to offer Him your loaves and fishes, and then, watch the miracles unfold! St. Joan of Arc said: “Act, and God will act!” St. Joan of Arc, pray for us!
