Over the years, millions of Catholics have visited the 36 missions on the California coast. Very popular missions include San Luís Obispo, San Juan Caistrano and San Luís Rey. The history of the California Missions are connected to a Spanish Franciscan Missionary priest named Fr. Junípero Serra. Serra was canonized by Pope Francis last Wednesday in Washington D.C. as our 11th American saint!

It is interesting that when Father Serra founded California's first mission in 1769, he wasn’t exactly a robust figure. He was 56 years old and an asthmatic with a chronic sore on his leg, the result of a bug bite. Fr. Serra was small in stature, a mere 5 feet, 2 inches. But despite his small frame, Fr. Serra, was a spiritual giant known as the Apostle of California.

Throughout his life, Serra became aware of the hardships of frontier living for sure. He is a saint admired for his remarkable determination despite tremendous adversity that would have left me whining! His missionary life was a long battle with cold and hunger, with unsympathetic military commanders and politicians and the constant danger of death at the hands of non-Christian native peoples. But through it all, prayer fed his zeal, often from midnight until dawn.

St. Junípero Serra endured this adversity to fulfill his missionary purpose--to evangelize Native Americans. To fulfill this goal, Father Serra traveled on foot for thousands of miles, eventually establishing 9 of the 36 California missions. In addition to sharing the Good News, Serra and the Friars introduced sound methods of agriculture/ irrigation, cattle raising and arts and crafts to Native Americans.

One of the things that Fr. Serra is known for (and also sometimes criticized for) was his fraternal protection of native peoples. He battled governors, bureaucrats and military commanders to secure a system of laws to pro- tect Native Americans against injustices inflicted by Spanish soldiers.

By the time Father Serra died in 1784 he had baptized 6,000 Native Americans, about 10 percent of the California Native American population. Interestingly, today more than 60 percent of the state's 26 million citizens live in areas surrounding the missions.

St. Junípero Serra’s evangelical example serves us well today. He was convinced of the Gospel message, so he used all of his gifts and talents to share the story of Jesus Christ to those who did not know Him. Indeed, we are called to the same! He also serves as patron of priestly vocations and a group dedicated to the promotion of vocations, the Serra Club, bears his name. Let us ask for his intercession and blessing for our country.

O God, in your ineffable mercy, you chose St. Junipero Serra
as a means of gathering many peoples of the Americas into your Church.
Grant that through his intercession our hearts may be united to you
in ever greater love so that at all times and in all places
we may show forth the image of your Only-Begotten Son our Lord
Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. St. Junípero Serra, pray for us!

God Bless,

Fr. Don Kline
