Forming Intentional Disciples (part I of V)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The first step of conversion involves having INITIAL TRUST.

Hopefully, everyone understands what it means to have a friendship with someone else… what it means to have a really good friend. How about having a friendship with Our Lord? As a Catholic, do you have a positive relationship with Jesus Christ, the Church, and other Christian believers? IF you want to move closer to Our Lord then you MUST have INITIAL TRUST. Do you trust that Our Lord loves you and desires to be in a holy relationship with YOU?!?!

An example of INITIAL TRUST is shown in the experience of a young man who was considering the priesthood in the early 80's. He had some understanding of the most basic aspects of the Gospel and teachings of Christ. He was a life-long Catholic from a good Catholic family. He also found that he lived in a culture that was not always supportive of the Church and certainly not receptive to the idea of becoming a priest. He had heard all the rhetoric about how the Church needed to get with the times and allow priests to get married and have a family. He felt the pressure from his classmates to get a "real job" and make lots of money. Then there was the larger culture that made fun of priests and religious often depicting them as backward and out of touch with society.

I know this guy's story because he is me. And when I was 21 years old, I decided to follow Our Lord's invitation to become a priest. With the love and support of my family and closest friends, I was able to begin a nine-year journey to become a Catholic priest. I was not sure what I was getting myself into when I began. There were more questions than answers. However, I continued to meet people along the way who where brilliant men and women who where humble and talented and exciting and gracious and loving people of God. They showed me time and time again how trusting in Our Lord changes one's life for the better.

My experience of following Our Lord as a seminarian was a life-changing event. I have experienced humanity at its best and its worst… the birth of the child and the murder of a son, the joy of newly weds and the sorrow of a spouse's funeral. I have seen the devil destroy families and I have witnessed Our Lord bring families together at every Mass. I have experienced Christ in the homeless and the hungry and in the parishioner who gives without limit and wants no recognition other than to be known by Our Lord.

It's been nearly twenty years of trusting Our Lord. He has always provided me with everything I need and more. With each act of kindness, done simply out of love, Our Lord has provided the necessary bridge that enables me to move closer to Him. The bridge has been given to me in the lives lived in joy, generosity and integrity — not for show, but for the glory of Christ. INITIAL TRUST will break down walls of doubt and lead many to know God's love.

Formando Discípulos Intencionales (Parte I of V)
