The witness of a modern day saint…

Because of the excitement around the canonizations of Sts. John XXIII and John Paul II, another saint with an important messages for our time was celebrated this past week but a bit hidden in the shadow of these celebrations.

April 28th is the Feast of Saint Gianna Molla, a medical doctor and mother of four. She is a saint for our modern times and has much to teach Catholics, mothers, and working women.

St. Gianna was a fun loving wife and mother who put her faith into action, regularly serving the poor of her day. After opening her own medical clinic she gave special attention to mothers, babies, the elderly and the poor. Her faith inspired her to specialize in Pediatrics at the University of Milan in 1952.

When she was pregnant with her fourth child a fibroma developed in her uterus. Her doctors gave her three treatment options: an abortion, which would save her life but directly terminate the life of her unborn child; a hysterectomy, which would save her life yet indirectly terminate the life of her unborn child (a morally permissible option incidentally); or a risky surgery to remove the fibroma which could put her life in danger but save her baby.

Gianna made the heroic choice to remove the fibroma, the option with the best chance to save her unborn child–even though it was the option that put her life at risk the most. After the surgery complications persisted that led to a risky delivery. On Good Friday morning in 1962, her daughter Gianna Emanuela was born. She told her doctors, "If you must decide between me and the child, do not hesitate: choose the child – I insist on it. Save her." Seven days later, Gianna died after much suffering on April 28, 1962. She was only 39 years old. Among her last words were, "Jesus, I love you." In a time when human life is seen a disposable and abortion is an option for any reason, St. Gianna teaches us that human life is sacred, most especially the most innocent among us.

Mother's Day is next week. I think St. Gianna serves as just one example of the amazing work of Catholic mothers. Let us ask for her intercession and God's blessing for mothers who bravely uphold the human life of their children.

Sálvenla a ella."
