Worship at the One True Altar

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Abraham is our Father in Faith. He is our Father in faith because he has showed us what it means to make a free decision to serve God and trust God completely. Abraham had many options - many so called gods that he could worship. He chose not to worship at the altar of the gods of prosperity and technology to name a few. He was rewarded greatly for his good and holy decision. Those who decide to worship at the altar of false gods are heading for misery.

Many people choose to worship at the altar of false gods in our current culture. One obvious example is the choice people have made to worship at the altar of prosperity. To be clear, wealth is not evil. The preoccupation with wealth is evil. It is very tempting to worship at the altar of the gods that will make a person financially comfortable.

Another altar that many choose to worship in front of is the altar of technology. Again, technology is not evil in itself. We can appreciate the incredible medical technology that has saved millions of lives. The problem however is that our technology is sometimes so brilliant it can blind us to the evils of technology as well. For example, reproductive technology has tempted the unsuspecting couple to worship at this altar.

When I talk with young couples about family plans, one of the things I hear again and again is, "Father, it is so expensive to have a child. We are going to wait a few years." This kind of thinking can place you at two altars that are worshipping two false gods: the god of money and the god of technology. I have known couples making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year who have said they could not afford a child right now. Actually they could afford to have many children but they decided that they could not "afford" to give up their careers.

Our Lord is calling each of us to leave behind the gods of this culture, and to get beyond appearances to see what really matters. Yes, our culture has many good things to offer. Prosperity can do good and we all need to do our part to financially assist others in the world. Technology has the potential to bring the Gospel to the world; through proper use of it many can come to know Christ.

Let us worship at the one true altar at every Catholic Mass and live the faith… trusting that God will give us everything we need for eternal life.

God Bless,
Fr. Don Kline
