Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today Our Lord reminds us to be vigilant, watchful, and on your guard. Sadly, many people are vigilant and watchful and on guard about things that in the end really don't matter. Our Lord invites us to watch for Him and the things of Heaven and to avoid sin and the devil.
Maybe you have heard the story about a demon assigned to tempt a young man. It was his first assignment so the "junior devil" discussed his strategy with a senior devil. "I know how to bring this young man down," he said, "I will convince him there is no God." The senior devil said, "That's fine for some, but it will not work for this young man. All he has to do is look at the night sky and he will realize that God exists." The junior tempter said, "Well, then I will convince him there is no devil." The senior tempter said, "That approach has more promise, but if he looks around his neighborhood, he will realize the devil exists." Then the senior tempter said, "Here's the best plan. Don't try to convince him that there is no God or that there is no devil. Just tell him there is no hurry."
The devil has been working very hard at getting people to put off worrying about things like: Heaven, God, Church teaching, forgiving others, getting more involved at your parish, going to confession, loving your enemy, helping the poor, being prolife, being pro-family and being morally good, just to name a few things that many have put on hold. The problem is that I see people die, some very suddenly - in accidents or by a stroke or heart attack. It happens to the young as well as the old. Yet many still don't think it will happen to them. The tempter keeps saying to us, "Don't worry. You won't die. There is no hurry."
This strategy has worked well in our society today. A large percentage believe (at least, vaguely) that God exists. The majority also believe that the devil - and therefore, hell - exists. What they don't believe in is their own death. Sadly, many act like their own death lies way in the future. So why hurry or be prepared now… there is plenty of time.
Jesus says just the opposite in today's Gospel. Be prepared. Be vigilant. Your death, your hour of judgment will come like a thief in the night. A number of years back, someone broke into my car and stole my radio. He didn't send a note. He didn't call saying, "I'll be breaking into your car tonight." No, he showed up at most unexpected moment. Jesus tells us that he will come at the moment we least expect. Be prepared. Be vigilant. This could be your last day or mine. This is a serious matter - really the only thing that finally matters: where will you spend eternity? Be prepared. Be vigilant. Do not be lulled into thinking there is no hurry. Jesus will show up like a burglar. The time of reckoning will come when you least expect it.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Ahora el Señor nos recuerda que debemos de estar alerta, vigilante, y en guardia. Tristemente, muchas personas están alertas, vigilantes, y en guardia con cosas que al final realmente no importan. Nuestro Señor nos invita a vigilarlo a EL y a las cosas del Cielo y ha evitar el pecado y al demonio.
Tal vez han escuchado acerca de la historia acerca de un demonio que fue asignado tentar a un hombre joven. Era su primera misión para el "diablo Junior", y el discutía su estrategia con un demonio de alto rango. "Yo sé cómo hacer caer a este joven," dijo "yo lo convenceré que Dios no existe." El diablo de alto rango dijo, "Eso esta bien para algunos, pero eso funcionara para este joven. Todo lo que él tiene que hacer es mirar el cielo en la noche y se dará cuenta que Dios si existe." El tentador Junior dijo, "bueno, entonces yo lo convenceré que el demonio no existe." El tentador de alto rango dijo, "este enfoque tiene más futuro, pero si él ve alrededor de su vecindario, el se dará cuenta que el demonio si existe." Entonces el tentador de alto rango dijo, "aquí esta el mejor plan. No te preocupes de convencerlo que no existe Dios o que no existe el demonio. Solo dile que no hay prisa".
El demonio ha estado trabajando muy duro para que la gente deje de preocuparse por las cosas como: el Cielo, Dios, las enseñanzas de la Iglesia, perdonar a los demás, involucrarse en su parroquia, ir a la confesión, amar a sus enemigos, ayudar a los pobres, ser próvida, ser pro familia, y ser moralmente bueno, solo por nombrar algunas cosas que muchos han puesto en espera. El problema es que yo veo a las personas morir, algunos de repente—en accidentes, o por un ataque al corazón. Esto solo le pasa a los jóvenes y a los viejos. Sin embargo, muchos no creen que les podría pasar a ellos. El tentador nos sigue diciendo, "no te preocupes tú no te vas a morir. No hay prisa."
Esta tragedia ha trabajado muy bien en nuestra sociedad hoy en día. Un gran porcentaje cree (vagamente) que Dios existe. La mayoría también creen que el demonio existe, y por lo consiguiente, creen que también existe el infierno. En lo que no creen es en su propia muerte. Tristemente muchos actúan como si su muerte es algo del futuro. Entonces para que prepararse o andar a prisa……..falta mucho tiempo.
Jesús nos dice lo contrario en el evangelio de hoy. Estén preparados, alertas. Su muerte, su hora del juicio vendrá como un ladrón en la noche. Hace varios años alguien se metió a mi carro y me robo mi radio. El no mando ninguna nota. El no me llamo diciendo, "Ahora en la noche robare el radio de tu carro." No, el apareció en el momento menos esperado. Jesús nos dice que el vendrá en el momento menos esperado. Estén preparados, estén alertas. Este puede ser su último día o el mío. Esto es serio, realmente lo único que al final importa es: en donde pasaras el resto de la eternidad. Por eso estén preparados y alertas, no caigan en la mentalidad de que no hay prisa. Jesús aparecerá como un ladrón en la noche. La hora de la verdad llegara cuando menos lo esperemos.
