Pope Francis and Poverty

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Pope Francis makes me feel uncomfortable like Mother Teresa made me feel uncomfortable. They both remind me of the importance of personal simplicity. When I hear stories circulate about our new pope taking mass transit while in his native Argentina— it wakes me up! And his shoes are old! And he's not moving into the lavish papal apartment. So yes, he's making me uncomfortable and that's a good thing.

So what Pope Francis is teaching us about poverty? In addition to his call to relieve the sufferings of the poor by living more simply, he also is reminding us that poverty goes beyond the material world. For in the sight of the God of the Universe, we're all poor and needy.

So in one of the most economically blessed counties in the country, how are we poor? Spiritually. Blessed Mother Theresa once noted that there is more hunger for love and affection than for bread. We are spiritually starving and may not even be aware of it! In one of his opening addresses, Pope Francis said,

"There is another form of poverty! It is the spiritual poverty of our time, which afflicts the so-called richer countries particularly seriously… And that brings me to a second reason for my name. Francis of Assisi tells us we should work to build peace. But there is no true peace without truth! There cannot be true peace if everyone is his own criterion, if everyone can always claim exclusively his own rights, without at the same time caring for the good of others, of everyone, on the basis of the nature that unites every human being on this earth."

In many ways, many in our culture are too comfortable with having lots of "stuff" around to fill our lives and so we become blinded to those in need – including our souls need for God. In this Year of Faith, may holy men like Pope Francis be a reminder for us of the importance of seeking simplicity so that we may truly experience the graciousness of God trusting that He provides for what we truly need.

God Bless,
