Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This week we commemorated the 40th anniversary of Roe. v. Wade in which the United States Supreme Court handed down a decision that legalized abortion. With no legislative input, the justices removed legal protection from unborn children right up to the moment of birth. 55,881,760 unborn children have been put to death since 1973. If we were to observe a second of silence for each one of them, it would last twenty-one months.
Silence is an appropriate response when making big decisions. Last year a young woman from our parish joined a contemplative religious community, the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. It was not that she wanted to run away from the problems of the world… far from it. She is very much a fighter, but she recognizes that ultimately we are not so much in a political battle as a spiritual battle - and our greatest response is prayer. That is why Perpetual Adoration here at St. Joan of Arc is so important. Our Lord helps us focus on what truly matters.
Today we hear about Jesus beginning his public ministry. Before doing so, he spent forty days in the desert – and before that, thirty years in relative seclusion. Jesus did not come to announce some dazzling new message, but rather to remind us of what we had forgotten. He unrolled the scroll of Isaiah, a prophet who lived eight hundred years before him. The message was one that all men know in their hearts - but we need reminding - that we have a duty toward those who are in a weaker position: the poor, the aliens, the oppressed. The Bible - both Old and New Testament - teaches that God is on the side of those who have fewer resources to defend themselves. And no one in our society is more defenseless than an unborn child.

Queridos Hermano y Hermanas en Cristo,
Esta semana conmemoramos el aniversario de Roe v. Wade, en el cual la Corte Suprema de Justicia de los Estados Unidos tomo la decisión de legalizar el aborto. Sin ningún apoyo legislativo, la justicia remueve la protección de los niños no nacidos hasta el nacimiento. 55,881, 760 niños no nacidos han muerto desde 1973. Si nos tomáramos un minuto de silencio por cada uno no llevaría más o menos 21 meses.
El silencio es una respuesta apropiada cuando se toman grandes decisiones. El año pasado una joven de nuestra parroquia se unió a la comunidad contemplativa religiosa de las Clarisas de Adoración Perpetua. No es que ella quisiera huir de los problemas del mundo……Ella es una gran mujer, muy luchadora, pero ella reconoce que al final no estamos realmente en una batalla política, sino en una batalla espiritual—y nuestra respuesta más grande es la oración. Es por esa razón que la Adoración Perpetua aquí en Santa Juana de Arco es tan importante. Nuestro Señor nos ayuda a enfocarnos en lo que realmente importa.
Ahora estamos a punto de escuchar el comienzo del ministerio público de Jesús. Antes de hacerlo, EL paso cuarenta día y noches en el desierto—y antes de eso EL paso treinta años relativamente aislado. Jesús no vino a anunciar ningún mensaje nuevo y deslumbrante, sino que para recordarnos de lo que nos hemos olvidado. El abrió el Libro de Isaías, un profeta que vivió 800 años antes que Jesús. El mensaje era uno que todos los hombres conocían en su corazón—pero que necesitaba un recordatorio—que tenemos un deber con todos los que están en una posición más débil: los pobres, los extranjeros, los oprimidos. La Biblia—los dos el Antiguo y el Nuevo Testamento—nos enseñan que Dios esta de lado de los que tienen pocos recursos para defenderse. Y no existe nadie más en nuestra sociedad que sea más indefenso que un bebe que no ha nacido.
