Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany. What exactly is an epiphany? Some would say that it is a sudden, profound realization of something important; a breakthrough; a deep and profound understanding of something once mysterious. The Church uses the term to describe God as being made manifest in Jesus Christ. On Christmas we focused on Jesus' humanity. On Epiphany we turn our attention to Christ's divinity. We pause here today, just like the wise men, to pay this Divine Child homage and adoration as only a true King deserves. Next week we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, a dramatic leap forward in Jesus' life when we celebrate the initiation of Jesus' public ministry. After his Baptism in the waters of the Jordan, we ponder that Jesus walked among us, teaching us by his words and example-as God and as man.
All of these celebrations – from Christ's birth to His Baptism – draw us into a great mystery that is merely the beginning of the journey of faith. Just like how the light of a far-away star drew the magi to Bethlehem, so does our Lord attract us to adore and worship Him. Sometimes we mistakenly think this action is something we have initiated on our own. In reality we are actually responding to something beautiful and profound. We are seeing, hearing and experiencing the truth, goodness and beauty in God that draws us close to Him. We walk together with Our Lord who is leading us to heaven. At times we may be tempted to question and say "what's the use?" We are reminded that we are never alone. Our Lord is manifested to us in the Sacraments, especially the Most Holy Eucharist.
Our Lord is also made manifest in the Christian community. Each person is a gift from God who is meant to assist us along the way. We are on this journey together. As part of the journey, we are called by Our Lord to care for those we encounter… a teenager reaching out for help, an elderly person needing company, a poor family needing food, children in Africa needing medicine. Together we can glorify God in ways that are pleasing to Him. May this Year of Faith be for us a reminder of the many and varied ways that Our Lord places people 'on the way' to help us reach our goal - heaven. Caring for others is a vital step along the path He has laid out for us.
As you walk along the path of faith this week, consider how God has manifested Himself to you personally. What is your response to this human and divine outpouring of love? Are you an obligatory Catholic or are you a cheerful steward giving back what He has already given you? We are blessed at St. Joan of Arc to have a variety of ways to learn and serve as stewards of God's many gifts. This new year brings new opportunities to discover them.
May Our Lady be your solace and guide in every endeavor, joy, and trial! And may the Holy Eucharist be your wisdom and strength!

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
Ahora celebramos la Solemnidad de la Epifanía. ¿El qué es exactamente la epifanía? Algunos dicen que es la profunda realización de algo importante de repente, la ruptura; un entendimiento intenso y profundo de algo que alguna vez fue misterioso. La Iglesia usa este término para describir a Dios al ser manifestado en Jesucristo. En la Navidad nos enfocamos en la humanidad de Jesús. En la Epifanía le prestamos la atención a la divinidad de Jesús. Nos detenemos aquí hoy, al igual que los Reyes Magos a rendir homenaje al Divino Nino, la adoración que solamente un verdadero Rey se merece. La próxima semana celebraremos la Fiesta del Bautismo del Señor, un gran avance dramático en la vida de Jesús, en donde celebramos la iniciación del ministerio publico de Jesús. Después del Bautismo en las aguas del Jordán, reflexionamos que Jesús camino entre nosotros, enseñándonos con sus palabras y su ejemplo-como hombre y como Dios.
Todas estas celebraciones—desde el nacimiento de Cristo hasta su Bautismo—nos llevan a un gran misterio que no es más que el comienzo de nuestra jornada de fe. Igual que como la luz de una estrella lejana llamo a los magos a Belén, de la misma manera nuestro Señor no atrae hacia él para adorarlo. A veces pensamos erróneamente que esta acción es algo que hemos iniciado por nosotros mismos. Cuando en realidad estamos respondiendo a algo hermoso y profundo. Estamos viendo, escuchando y experimentando la verdad, la bondad, y la belleza en Dios que nos acerca a Él. Caminamos junto a Nuestro Señor que nos esta guiando al Cielo. Hay momentos en donde nos sentimos tentados a preguntarnos y decir "¿para qué sirve todo esto?" Pero se nos recuerda que nunca estamos solos. Nuestro Señor se nos manifiesta en los Sacramentos, especialmente en el sacramento de la Santa Eucaristía.
Nuestro Senos también se manifiesta en la comunidad Cristiana. Cada persona es un regalo de Dios que tiene el propósito de ayudar en el camino. Estamos en esta jornada juntos. Y como parte de esta jornada, somos llamados por Nuestro Señor a cuidar por los que nos encontremos en el camino….a un adolecente que necesita ayuda, una persona de edad avanzada que necesita compañía, una familia pobre que necesita comida, los niños en África que necesitan medicina. Juntos podemos glorificar a Dios de muchas maneras. Que este Año de la Fe sea un recordatorio de las muchas y diferentes maneras que Nuestro Señor pone a diferentes personas en nuestro camino para alcanzar nuestra meta—el cielo. EL cuidar de los demás es un paso vital en el camino que EL ha preparado para nosotros.
Mientras caminen el camino de la fe esta semana, reflexiones de que manera Dios se ha manifestado a usted personalmente. ¿Cuál es su respuesta a este derrame de amor humano y divino? ¿Es usted un católico obligado o es usted un administrador alegre que está devolviendo lo que se le ha dado? Aquí en esta parroquia de Santa Juana de Arco somos realmente bendecidos con las deferentes maneras de aprender y servir a Dios siendo buenos administradores de los muchos dones que Dios nos ha dado. El Año Nuevo trae nuevas oportunidades de descubrirlo.
